We have been bombarded with unattainable standards of beauty, and there are consequences. Join Rock Recovery and presenting sponsor Center for Discovery for an eye-opening screening of the documentary "The Illusionists" followed by a panel discussion featuring nutrition, eating disorder and media experts. "The Illusionists" provides insight to communities and individuals about how mass marketing media images are created and how they distort the true meaning of beauty, resulting in individuals feeling self doubt, uncertainty, and having body dissatisfaction. The post-screening discussion will shed light on how culture, media and body dissatisfaction can all play a role in the development of disordered eating.

Schedule of events:

  • Networking happy hour: 6:00 - 7:00 PM
  • Documentary screening: 7:00 - 7:45 PM
  • Q&A and panel discussion: 7:45 - 8:30 PM

In addition to serving as a unique opportunity for community education and engagement, this event will help support Rock Recovery's programs and will raise funds to provide affordable treatment for men and women battling disordered eating and educational programs for all ages.

To sponsor this event, please contact Rock Recovery's Executive Director, Christie Dondero, at christie@rockrecoveryed.org or 571-255-9906.

About Rock Recovery

More than 30 million Americans will battle an eating disorder at some point in their lifetime, and only 1 in 10 get treatment due to affordability, accessibility and stigma. Rock Recovery was founded to bridge gaps in treatment and understanding of disordered eating so that those numbers will change. Based on the belief that true freedom from disordered eating is possible, Rock Recovery has been working tirelessly since 2009 so that more men, women and children will be spared the devastating effects of the disease. Rock Recovery has been serving the Washington, DC community and beyond since for the past seven years and has provided affordable outpatient treatment to more than 75 clients and community empowerment programs to 10,000 individuals

About "The Illusionists"

Sex sells. What sells even more? Insecurity. Multi-billion dollar industries saturate our lives with images of unattainable beauty, exporting body hatred from New York to Beirut to Tokyo. Their target? Women, and increasingly men and children. The Illusionists turns the mirror on media, exposing the absurd, sometimes humorous, and shocking images that seek to enslave us.

Special thanks to our presenting sponsor Center for Discovery and our promotional partner Ladies DC.
